Project History
Waverley Council is proposing to install a basketball half court at Bondi Park. This upgrade will improve the recreational opportunities available at the park as identified in Waverley Council’s Open Space Recreation Strategy.
Key improvements proposed in the concept include:
- Installation of a basketball half court to replace the temporary pop-up facility.
- Access improvements and installation of informal seating.
The proposed half court aligns with the objectives of Waverley’s Open Space and Recreation Strategy, particularly in expanding opportunities for informal physical activity and integrating flexible recreational elements into park design. By co-locating the facility near the skate park, the concept aims to create a complementary and active recreation zone that caters to a broad range of age groups and abilities, while maintaining the overall character and usability of Bondi Park.
Proposed New Bondi Park Half-Court Location

Background
Bondi Park plays a central role in the social and recreational life of the Waverley community. As one of the most iconic and heavily used open spaces in the area, it supports a wide range of activities for local residents, visitors, and diverse user groups. With increasing demand on the park’s facilities, there is a growing need to carefully balance access, functionality, and sustainability - ensuring the park continues to provide high-quality green space, supports the natural environment, and meets the evolving needs of the community.
Council has considered a range of opportunities to enhance recreational offerings within Bondi Park, particularly in response to the popularity of informal, ‘turn-up and play’ activities such as basketball. Previous resolutions of Council have explored both temporary and permanent options for a half basketball court within the park. Most recently, a temporary pop-up court installed near the skate park has provided an opportunity to test usage, understand community demand, and observe how this type of facility integrates within the broader park setting.
A half-court is proposed at this location instead of a full-sized court due to spatial constraints and the need to retain pedestrian circulation and vehicle access for events.
