Background

The intersection of Bronte Road and Pacific Street was identified as a hazardous crossing for pedestrians and in need of traffic calming treatments.

Council developed four solutions to create a safer pedestrian experience and asked the community to choose the option that best suited their needs.

From the consultation feedback Option 3 was voted the most suitable.

Option 1

Option 1: Concrete footpath down the western side of Bronte Rd and new kerbs.

To construct the footpath we will need to realign the kerb and gutter further into the street (as above in yellow). We are also suggesting building out the kerb on both sides of Pacific St and an island for a shorter crossing (green). This option increases the legal parking spots by one.

Option 2: New kerbs with pedestrian ramps.

To accommodate a safer crossing on Pacific St, Option 2 includes building new kerbs with pedestrian ramps. This option has no net loss or gain of legal parking spots

Option 3: Combination of both Options 1 and 2.

We will build a new concrete footpath and kerb buildouts to allow for a safer crossing across both Pacific St and Bronte Rd. Option 3 will create a direct link for pedestrians onto the stairs and down towards Bronte Beach. This option has no net loss or gain of legal parking spots

Options 4: Kerb blister and centre island construction ONLY.

This option is the simplest of the four. It slows the speed of vehicles but does not provide as improved pedestrian safety as the other options. As part of a previous project, this design was approved by Waverley Traffic Committee to calm the speed of vehicles. This option has no net loss or gain of legal parking spots.
