Bondi Junction Cycleway and Streetscapes Upgrade receives stimulus funding

9 November 2020

The next stage of Waverley Council’s Bondi Junction Cycleway and Streetscapes Upgrade has been awarded funding from the Commonwealth and New South Wales Government’s Pinch Point Program- an initiative to make Sydney’s metropolitan road network more efficient for all transport users.

The Pinch Point program is one of several infrastructure projects to share in a $1 billion joint investment by the Federal and State Liberal and Nationals Governments in shovel-ready infrastructure projects and road safety upgrades around Australia.

The works along Oxford Street between Denison Street to St James Road, Bondi Junction, will include a separated two-way cycleway and new street furniture, garden beds, footpaths, paving, lighting and additional trees on both sides of the street. These works will begin following completion this month of works along Spring Street.

Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, welcomed the completion of the Spring Street component of the cycleway and thanked local businesses for their patience throughout the project, particularly during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“I know businesses in the area have really been looking forward to the completion of the route along Spring Street and these works will enhance the retail experience in this busy area of Bondi Junction in the lead-up to Christmas,” Mayor Masselos said.

“The Bondi Junction CBD is looking greener and more inviting because of this upgrade, of course, it encourages the healthiest forms of transport, which is cycling and walking.”

The Bondi Junction Cycleway and Streetscapes Upgrade project is for a separated two-way cycleway through the Bondi Junction commercial centre linking Oxford Street, Syd Einfeld Drive and Bondi Road intersection to an existing cycleway at the north eastern corner of Centennial Park. It will improve connections for cycling, walking and access to public transport in Waverley.

Council is continuing to work with residents, businesses, tenants and landlords during the project to minimise any impacts.
