Campbell Parade is the gateway to the iconic Bondi Beach and is the key connection between the commercial strip and beach. The street has a rich history – originally a tram line in the early 1900’s, and is lined with a mix of heritage and contemporary buildings. It has evolved over the years adapting to the needs of pedestrians, restaurants and vehicles.
We want to make Campbell Parade a world-class destination that complements the famous Bondi Beach with vibrant outdoor dining, shopping and great views to the beach. The street should offer premium quality public footpaths, comfortable and attractive public seating and restaurant seating, art and landscaping.
Background
In 2015 we undertook a detailed review of Campbell Parade including the condition of footpaths, restaurant seating, street furniture, public art, and pedestrian counts. We also met with restaurants along this street to discuss footpath seating. We have now developed conceptual plans to address key issues and enhance this important street. The concepts include new shade structures for improved outdoor dining areas, new footpath paving, more street trees and safer pedestrian crossings. The project scope did not include changes to parking or traffic.
Council has also developed a Pilot Project to test and review the proposed new shade structure design for footpath seating. The structures are unique and reflect the beachside character, have integrated lighting and heating, as well as glass balustrades for wind protection. One structure will be installed between Curlewis Street and Beach Road at the end of 2016 for a 3 year trial, enabling the community and businesses to see and experience a new possibility for Campbell Parade, and will help to determine if this approach is suitable for the rest of Campbell Parade.
