About the draft Community Grants Policy and Guidelines

Waverley Council's Community Grants Programs provide financial assistance to support the delivery of key services targeting local community needs, and community-initiated projects and activities. Council will distribute more than $400,000 in community grants this year. Grants provision works from the ground-up to enable members of the community to take the lead on addressing issues and creating outcomes that are important to them. Working with the community through its grants programs enhances Council’s capacity through access to the expertise, connections and resources of its members.

Over the last two years, Council officers have undertaken a review of the framework for Council’s Community Grants Programs, with reference to the Local Government Act, other guidelines, and examples of best practice. Council believes that the draft Community Grants Policy and Program Guidelines, now open for public comment, provide a contemporary model for grants provision that will help Council to maintain an active, engaged and inclusive community into the future.

Community Services and Cultural Grants Program

The model proposed for the Community Services and Cultural Grants Program will enable continued support for the community service organisations that form an integral part of Waverley’s social fabric. At the same time, it will provide Council with mechanisms to ensure that its grants program is evidence-based and keeping pace with the changing needs of its community.

Key elements:

• Nominated local organisations will continue to have access by invitation
• Strengthened requirements for evidence-based planning and evaluation
• Access will be opened up to other organisations through EOI processes when funds become available.

Small Grants Program

The model proposed for the Small Grants Program will enable continued support for projects and activities initiated by members of the community.

Key elements:

• Grants of up to $5,000 advertised twice annually
• Grants available in three streams: Community and Cultural, Environmental and Creative Streets
• Open to a wide range of individuals and organisations.
