We received significant positive feedback about the new Verge Garden Guidelines and Public Gardening Policy.

Verge gardens

Many people said gardening on a verge helps to beautify the neighbourhood, increases biodiversity, creates an opportunity to connect with neighbours and reduces illegal dumping. People noted that verge gardens and any related compost bins should be well maintained. Access issues were raised in terms of making sure space was provided on verges for garbage collection and the opening of car doors.

Positive outcomes from gardens

People felt that care for the local environment and having pride in place was important and that there were many positive well-being outcomes from establishing a garden as well.

Public gardens

Two thirds of responders had access to a public garden, 90% had not sought approval for a public garden previously and were not involved with an existing community or shared garden.

Growing food

Benefits of growing locally were outlined, such as reducing food waste and the carbon footprint.

Overall

People felt that the new policy and guidelines would make it easier for them to create a successful garden in a public space in Waverley.

“I think the current consideration to updating these policies is evidence of a Council that is truly serving its public and taking residents’ views on board. I am very impressed with the way Council has made such initiatives and feel that my rate payments are REALLY being used to advantage in the community”.
