Project Update

Since October 2024, Council has trialled a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service with over 3,000 households in Waverley participating. Households in the trial put food scraps in their green-lid (FOGO) bin together with garden organics. The FOGO bins were collected weekly, and its contents were turned into nutrient-rich compost.

As we move towards a 2027 council-wide roll out of the service, the Have Your Say feedback project page is winding down and information about FOGO can now be found on the Waverley Council website.

The FOGO trial has helped Council gain valuable insights about the key challenges experienced by households and how we can support you better.

Thank you to those Waverley households for using the trial service, for sharing your views and feedback about food waste separation and how it worked for you. Your efforts have resulted in 328 tonnes of food waste diverted from landfill and is helping council plan the best possible service for you and your neighbours.

The FOGO Trial

Waverley Council is rolling out a new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) service, starting with a one-year trial. Collections commenced in October 2024, with around 2000 households now able to put food scraps into their green organics bin, along with garden waste. These materials are collected and processed into compost at a commercial facility, transforming what would have been waste into a valuable resource.

Why FOGO?

This trial is a key step in Waverley’s commitment to a sustainable future. It’s part of our broader Waste Strategy, which aims to halve the amount of organic waste sent to landfill by 2030. Waste is a challenge we all share, and by offering new, convenient services like FOGO, we’re working with our community to reduce waste and protect the environment.

State Government Mandate

By 2030, all councils across New South Wales must provide a FOGO service, as outlined in the NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041. In light of this, please be aware that for streets included in the trial, FOGO will be a permanent service; we do not intend to discontinue it after the trial ends. Instead, the insights we gather will guide us in expanding FOGO to all Waverley residents, creating a more sustainable community for everyone.

Resource Recovery & Emission Reduction

Did you know that in the average Waverley garbage bin, approximately 40% of waste is food? FOGO offers a powerful opportunity to divert that waste from landfill, recover valuable resources, and contribute to a circular economy. By participating in the trial, residents are also helping to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions generated when organic waste decomposes in landfill.
