Did you know governments across the world are developing frameworks for managing risks associated with Artificial Intelligence, or AI?

AI uses advanced computing algorithms that can augment decision making by identifying meaningful patterns in data.

Whilst AI provides the potential to transform how we work, it is not without its risks and challenges. The importance of managing these risks is outlined in the Data NSW framework which provides guidance and sets out guardrails and risk assessments.

As a Council, the use of AI requires careful oversight, including legal, privacy, security and ethical risks such as bias, fairness, privacy and security. Our Information and Communication Technology (ICT) modernisation program is looking at ways we can improve governance in the way we introduce new technologies and manage our projects.

Guided by the NSW Data Framework, and potential risks posed by AI, we have made the decision to temporarily block access to generative AI websites including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude for Waverley employees while a full review and risk assessment is conducted. We’ll keep everyone informed on the progress of the review.

We realise some of you might have used GenAI in your role. If you have previously used ChatGPT or another GenAI platform for work purposes, such as summarising meeting notes, translating text or as a planning tool, we’d love to hear from you.

Take a couple of minutes to fill out this short survey, your responses will help inform the review process over the coming months.
