What does the proposal involve?
The proposal involves:
- introducing one-way southbound traffic along Park Parade from Bondi Road to Birrell Street, including signage and road markings
- installing unrestricted parallel parking on the western side of the street (creating approximately 40 additional spaces)
- creating a 'kiss and drop' zone along the west side of Park Parade near Birrell Street to enable drop offs to Waverley Park, and
- installing traffic calming devices including speed humps, a kerb extension and line markings.
Why are the changes being proposed?
Council is proposing Park Parade become one-way in response to feedback from residents in the area, who have reported that finding parking has become more difficult. This is partly as a result of additional activities being run in Waverley Park, which has increased the demand for parking in the vicinity. The proposal is also aimed at improving safety for residents, pedestrians and visitors to the park, with recent surveys showing that a number of vehicles exceed the speed limit of 50km/hr along the street. The installation of traffic calming devices would help slow motorists down and reduce this safety risk.
