We’re seeking feedback from the community about a proposal to upgrade the shared walking and cycling path along the southern side of Old South Head Road between Bon Accord Avenue and Victoria Street, Bondi Junction.

The proposal involves:

  • improving the existing shared path between Bondi Road and Bon Accord Avenue with new pavement markings and signage, improved intersection crossings and rationalisation of street furniture (where possible) and
  • extension of the existing shared path along the section of footpath between Bon Accord Avenue and Victoria Road. This includes widening a section of footpath and replacement with new landscaping;
  • new landscaping is also proposed to soften the streetscape and provide some shade

The new section of shared path will.

  • increase visibility of shared nature of the path for pedestrian and bike riders
  • improve understanding of pedestrian and bike rider interaction and responsibility
  • increase safety for pedestrians and bike riders on the shared path
  • improve safety at interaction with motor with an increased awareness of priorities
  • increase capacity of the shared path
  • provide bike riders with an alternate option to riding with heavy traffic on Old South Head Road between Victoria Road and Bon Accord Avenue
  • provide continuity for bike riders between the existing shared path on Victoria Road and on Old South Head Road between Bon Accord Avenue and Bondi Road.

The shared path is just under four metres in width with some pinch points due to street furniture. Detailed design for new landscaping proposed will take into consideration the need to provide adequate widths for this highly used path.
