Background

To improve public safety, alcohol-free zones (AFZs) are designated areas where alcohol is prohibited. The zones include all public roads, footpaths, car parks and lane-ways within the designated area.

AFZs are designed to prevent drinking in public places that are considered problem areas. This reduces the risk of anti-social behaviour as well as alcohol-related crime to help create a safer environment for all.

Council implements AFZs in accordance with the Liquor Act 2007, Local Government Act 1993 and the relevant Ministerial Guidelines. These guidelines advise it is not appropriate to implement an AFZ across entire Local Government Areas, but rather at locations identified as problem areas. To find out more, you can view the Act online here.

AFZs have been in place in Bondi Junction since 2000, and the Bondi Beach commercial Zone since 2002.
