Waverley Council will soon begin construction of three multi-purpose sports courts and the reinstallation of the bocce court in Waverley Park. As part of this project, Council is also preparing a Sports Lighting Plan to ensure adequate lighting for the courts and the whole of the park, and we are inviting your feedback.

How did the Sports Lighting Plan come about?

The lighting plan for Waverley Park has been planned since the adoption of the Waverley Park Master Plan and Plan of Management in 2012.

During the consultation on both of the plans, it became clear that there was high demand for existing and new sporting facilities in the Waverley community. This also complemented the findings of the 2008 Recreation Needs Study that Council commissioned and feedback from community sports groups and schools regarding limited access to sports facilities.

Adequate lighting enables safe use of the park for all users, particularly for use of the sporting fields and courts.

Why do we need more sports lighting?

There is a high demand for sporting facilities in Waverley, and improved sports lighting will enable optimised and safe use of the facilities and park, especially during winter. During winter months, lighting extends evening participation in sport and recreation activities.

Currently, there is inadequate lighting across all of the park’s sporting facilities:

  • Waverley Oval - not even coverage, sections of the field not lit to standard
  • Waverley Playing Fields - not an even coverage
  • Existing Netball Courts - no lights in area, resulting in no evening training for a winter sport.

The new courts will also require adequate sports lighting.
