Background

Over the past eight years, Council has undertaken revegetation programs across the LGA to connect small and isolated patches of vegetation, including the road median between upper and lower Carlisle Street Tarmararma (west of Sliva Street).

Waverley Council has identified a section of the verge on the north side of Carlisle Street Tamarama (between Silva Street and Dellview Street) as the location of a Woody Meadows Operational Trial.

Woody Meadows are novel low-cost plantings designed to improve the quality of public landscapes and require less maintenance than the typical style of plantings installed to date. Typical low maintenance plantings are monocultures with limited visual appeal, diversity, and function. In contrast, Woody Meadows are a resilient and adaptable approach to urban greening, using Australian shrublands as templates for design and maintenance.

Woody Meadows have been already successfully installed in a number of locations and environments in Melbourne and are now being rolled out in Sydney. The Woody Meadows planting will provide a number of benefits to the local environment, while retaining existing ocean views. Benefits include buffering and supporting our fragile and disconnected bushland remnants; providing additional fauna habitat; and generally increasing biodiversity within our LGA, while removing hazards for staff that are currently expected to manage the site using machinery.
