Project background

In 2025 Council resolved to establish a Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) in 2026. A directive was given on 29 January 2026 to launch Youth Advisory Committee recruitment in March 2026.

Waverley Council is committed to enabling young people’s active participation in decision-making and community life. This has been evidenced by youth engagement projects such as the annual Waverley Youth Summit to include young people’s voices in Council’s strategic planning and decision-making, and collaborations with young people for the development of programs such as Culture Waves and the annual Beach Bash event for Youth Week.

The organisational benefit of young people’s participation in decision making is an increased capacity to understand and respond to young people’s needs and interests. When young people share their lived experience and ideas, Council gains new perspectives and knowledge to make more accurate and relevant decisions in its planning, programs and services and are better able to be responsive and engage with young people.

Young people also benefit through the opportunity to acquire skills that build resilience and enable their transition to independence, and civic and economic participation.

The young people who attended the Waverley Youth Summit in November 2025 were consulted on the resolution and provided recommendations for the committee agenda in 2026.
