Project Update
In December 2025 Council approved the modified design, based on community feedback, to install rubber speed cushions and review the current line markings to visually narrow the road to address concerns about vehicle speeds at this intersection.
In 2026 Council will proceed to procurement for the construction phase of the treatments for Martins Avenue at Ocean Street. For further information and the design please see the Council Committee Report in the document library on this page.
Key Information
We invite you to give feedback about the proposed design for Martins Avenue and Ocean Street (intersection).
Concerns of residents about this location:
- General safety and movement for pedestrians, bike riders and vehicles
- High volumes of vehicular traffic
- Vehicle speed negotiating the intersection
Proposed design and traffic calming:
- Removal of existing pedestrian refuge island, kerb ramps and speed hump
- Construction of a raised intersection treatment with garden beds and feature tree
- Modification of traffic flow on Martins Avenue to left only at Ocean Street with a modal filter for bike users to continue west along Martins Avenue
- New median island and “No U-turn” sign in Ocean Street
- New reinforced concrete footpath pavement
- One additional street parking space. Further design refinements to improve cyclist safety through the intersection have changed the on-street parking arrangement.
