Tree replaced

15 March 2022

In 2021 Council carried out a focused consultation on the suitability of a new tree and seating at Bronte lookout (corner of Macpherson and Gardyne Streets). Neighbouring residents and the Bronte Precinct Committee were consulted.

We received 46 responses to a survey and verbal feedback from the Precinct Committee. Feedback on Bronte lookout and its design was generally positive, it’s a great space to sit and enjoy the view, details are summarised below.

Tree planting

A tree was initially planted behind the seat on Macpherson Street however it was vandalised and died. Most people were supportive of the tree replacement (Water Gum) behind the existing seat (59% supportive, 15% neutral and 26% unsupportive). Of those who are unsupportive there was concern of view loss due and unwanted shade during the winter months (noting that we consulted in winter). As there is a majority support for a Water Gum be planted which will not completely obstruct views. The tree location should be monitored and reviewed if vandalised again.

Seating

Additional seating was not as strongly supported with only 50% support. Due to the extremely steep slope it would not be easy to install an additional seat. Feedback also indicated that the lookout was well used including at night with some complaints from neighbouring residents. There was some concern that additional seating would heighten this issue. It is therefore recommended that no additional seating be installed.

The area has been added to the public place cleansing teams schedule and the recommended tree planting can take place in Autumn 2022.
