Complete Streets: Cycleway and Streetscapes

Consultation has concluded

The Complete Streets: Cycleway and Streetscapes project focuses on Spring Street, Denison Street and Oxford Street where Council will be:
  • creating a separated cycleway with some shared paths connecting Bondi Junction to the cycleway that’s outside Centennial Park
  • significantly improving footpaths and planning new street trees.
What are the key benefits of this project?
  • Minimal impact on the existing roads and parking (only one car park will be lost)
  • 60 new street trees
  • 1,800 square metres of new footpath, allowing for outdoor seating and garden beds
  • We want to encourage more people to cycle to help to get cars off our roads
  • The cycleway will take bike riders off Oxford Street Mall
  • Improved amenity for pedestrians and bike riders outside Waverley Bus Depot
  • Ties in with Council’s broader goal for Bondi Junction: we want to make the area a great place to live and make sure it’s the premier urban centre in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

This project is the next phase of two Council projects:
  • Complete Streets, a comprehensive plan to enhance Bondi Junction through greening, upgrading of footpaths and public places and improving connections for cycling, walking and access to public transport; and
  • The Waverley Bike Plan, which will help increase the number of trips made by bicycle by improving infrastructure.
This project also ties into Transport for NSW’s Sydney’s Cycling Future, a report that aims to plan, prioritise and provide for cycling in Sydney. The report identified Bondi Junction to CBD as a priority route for urgent investigation and development. The new route will run along Spring, Denison and Oxford streets, and will connect to the cycleway that’s on the northern side of Centennial Park between York Road and Lang Road.

How was the preliminary design developed?
Council worked with Spackman, Mossop and Michaels, an award-winning international firm for landscape architecture and urban design, to develop the preliminary design.

The design is based on feedback and research from:
  • Our Complete Streets project, where you told us you wanted:
  1. more street trees and planter beds
  2. safer and accessible provisions for cyclists.
  • The Waverley Bike Plan, which was adopted by Council in December 2013. The plan proposes upgrades to six priority routes. Priority Route 1 is from Bondi Beach to Bondi Junction and the Sydney CBD.
  • Key transport authorities, including Transport for NSW, Roads and Maritime Services and Sydney Buses.

We've recently been asking for your feedback on some new ideas for West Oxford Street.

The initial feedback Council received for the West Oxford Street Precinct Plan, including options to make the area more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists have been considered in the development of this project’s preliminary design.

What are the next steps?
Following the public exhibition period, all of the feedback and comments submitted will be collated and presented back to Council in December 2015.

A final design will then be prepared and presented back to Council in April 2015. Construction on this project is expected to start in July 2015.
