Project Background
Our streets are essential to everyday life in our community—supporting residents, local businesses, workers and visitors alike. We’re committed to making sure people and goods can move efficiently, while keeping all road users safe, including pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users, drivers and motorbike riders.
The Hunter Ward Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) study is an area-wide treatment plan designed to calm traffic, reduce cut-through traffic, and ensure vehicle speeds are appropriate for the urban environment. This work supports our broader goal of introducing 40km/h speed zones across the Waverley Local Government Area (LGA).
Key Information
A Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) study is the first step in identifying traffic issues and exploring potential solutions.
Possible LATM treatments may include:
- Physical measures, such as speed humps, kerb extensions and raised pedestrian crossings
- Streetscape improvements, to enhance the look and feel of local streets
- Non-physical measures, such as signage or line marking, to influence driver behaviour.
After the study is completed, funding must be secured and approvals obtained from Council and Transport for NSW before any changes can be delivered.
Waverley Council has previously undertaken a LATM study in Bondi, with strong community input, and is now progressing improvement works in that area.
The Hunter Ward LATM study aligns with key Council strategies, including:
- Waverley’s People, Movement and Places (WPMP 2017)
- Community Strategic Plan 2025–2035
- Draft Waverley Walking Strategy 2025–2035
- Waverley Bike Strategy and Action Plan 2025–2035.
An initial technical assessment has already been completed, drawing on a wide range of data to identify existing traffic issues and potential locations for improvement.
