Charing Cross Village Centre

Council will be upgrading the streetscape in Charing Cross village centre including undergrounding powerlines to improve amenity and accessibility throughout Bronte Rd.

The scope includes:

  • upgrades to pathways and roads and introduction of trees and on-street seating
  • removal of existing wooden light poles and installation of new multifunction poles for improved lighting, banner flags and bike hoops
  • Traffic study to assess safety and efficiency of the transport network.
  • undergrounding of powerlines aka Accredited Service Provider Level 3 (ASP3) - see FAQs for more information.

How to have your say:

We created the scope from feedback in the Village Centres Strategy consultation, the People, Movement, Places plan and Community Strategic Plan. Once we have a concept we will ask any businesses, schools, residents, the Charing Cross precinct committee and as many community members as would like to be involved, to provide us with feedback and suggestions.

If you would like to be apart of this process you can do it in a number of ways:

  1. Follow the project (right-hand side panel), you will receive updates on this project
  2. If you think we have missed something from the list above fill out the form below

Charing Cross village centre, located south of Bondi Junction, is known for its community-minded values and heritage. It caters to small businesses, schools, residents and a large volume of through and local traffic. It is a well-loved village centre, in need of a streetscape upgrade.

We have already gathered feedback from two different consultations and studies, People, Movement and Places (2017) and the Draft Village Centre Strategy (currently on community consultation). From this, we have developed an idea of what you like and don't like about Charing Cross and we'd like to make sure we continue on the right track.

    The project's scope includes:

    • a Traffic Study to:
      • review the movements of vehicles through Charing Cross (including whether through traffic should be directed away onto Carrington Rd)
      • focus on public transport, walking and cycling on Bronte Rd
      • assess the safety and efficiency of intersections
      • look at the current/future pick-up/drop-off zones for St Catherine’s Primary and High Schools and all current bus stop locations
    • upgrades to pathways and roads
    • undergrounding of powerlines aka ASP3 (see FAQs).
    • the introduction of trees
    • removal of existing light poles and installation of multipurpose ones for improved lighting, banner flags and bike circles
    • on-street seating throughout the village centre.
