Background

For over 90 years, Bondi Pavilion has been a central part of life for residents and visitors to Bondi Beach. From theatre to pottery, change rooms to ice rinks, ballrooms to music festival, the Pavilion has done it all.

In June 2020, Buildcorp was announced as the head contractor to carry out works to restore the Pavilion to its former glory, with the project being completed in September 2022.

The project’s complexity consisted of major structural, remedial, and civil works as complex as the heritage significance. Sensitively restoring original finishes and finds which included the Aboriginal mosaic, painted murals, and unearthed graphics, overhauling and adding new services which include state of art audio-visual equipment.

The Pavilion has been repurposed to enhance the community experience and bring the residents of Waverley and their neighbours back together.

Bondi Pavilion aims to be a national and global leader in sustainability through innovative environmental technology and will be a certified Green Star Five Star Rated Australian Building of Excellence ready for net zero accreditation, paving the way for future generations.

Bondi Story Room is a collection of three spaces in Bondi Pavilion, that came out of previous consultation feedback and the Bondi Pavilion Stakeholder Committee. The vision for these spaces is that they would celebrate the rich history of Bondi culture in all its aspects, including:

  • Indigenous culture
  • current cultural events / attractions
  • surfing history / surfing culture
  • local culture across multiple nationalities
  • local history
  • information about the local environment

Waverley Council and TZG architects are working with industry leaders in museum experience design, Grumpy Sailor to help develop and deliver a design for Bondi Story Room.

What will it look like?

Taking this brief, Grumpy Sailor have conceived an interactive digital exhibition for the main space, to share and celebrate the many stories of our community.

Located at the west entry of the restored Bondi Pavilion, Bondi Story Room will reveal meaningful narratives, profile local identities, celebrate milestones and delve into Bondi life past and present. Bondi's broad and significant heritage will be featured through archival material, videos, photographs, sound and text.

Bondi Story Room is intended to evolve and change over time. The personalities and events profiled in the digital exhibition will continue to grow. All submissions will be reviewed and key figures identified for research and inclusion in the opening iteration of Bondi Story Room. The stories will be featured through archival material, videos, photographs, sound and text. Over the following years, more figures will be identified, researched and included as a growing and visible archive.
