Project Update

Sydney Water will be undertaking environmental management works at Gilgandra Reserve, North Bondi in March 2024 in advance of Waverley Council’s upgrade of the play space.

The Sydney Water works will include removing subsoil impacted by asbestos from historical demolition work. Asbestos fibres have not been detected on the surface of the site. The works proposed by Sydney Water will provide a longer-term solution to mediate the risk of any contaminated material becoming exposed in the future. Refer to the Sydney Water Notification letter in the Document Library for further information.

The works will be undertaken safely within a highly controlled and regulated environment. Gilgandra Park will be temporarily fenced and barricaded during this project and Sydney Water will be undertaking all necessary safety measures, such as air monitoring, for the duration of the soil removal.

Part of these works will include the demolition of the existing playground. Sydney Water will be making the park safe in preparation for Council’s contractors to immediately rebuild a new playground.

Council will be working closely with Sydney Water as these works progress and look forward to reopening the new park and playground for the community to continue to enjoy for many years to come.

Background

Gilgandra Reserve is owned by Sydney Water with a lease agreement allowing Council to use, manage and maintain the reserve for public use. Sydney Water’s consent is required for any upgrades on their land and Council Officers are actively working with Sydney Water on this project.

There are several key constraints to development on the land, including underground infrastructure and existing mature trees.

Community consultation related to the concept proposals for an upgrade to Gilgandra Reserve were undertaken in 2023. We're improving access in line with Council’s Community Strategic Plan and Inclusive Playspace Study, and bringing all play equipment up to date with the latest Australian Standards for safety. The play experience will be tailored to suit toddlers up to early school age, with an increase in the diversity of play opportunities.

Gilgandra playspace forms part of a network of closely located playspaces including Barracluff Park (District level playspace) and Niblick St (Pocket level playspace) that provide a variety of experiences and cater for older children.

How to have your say
