Project Update - November 2024
We are pleased to advise that following Community Consultation in June 2023, and the completion of site remediation works by Sydney Water, Council have completed construction works to upgrade the playground at Gilgandra Reserve. The upgrade includes the installation of play equipment, as well as the supply and installation of soft-fall play surfaces, furniture, fixtures and soft landscaping.
Sydney Water, the owners of the land, have provided council with a Site Remediation Validation Report and the playground is now open to the public.
Background
Gilgandra Reserve is owned by Sydney Water with a lease agreement allowing Council to use, manage and maintain the reserve for public use. Sydney Water’s consent is required for any upgrades on their land and Council Officers are actively working with Sydney Water on this project.
There are several key constraints to development on the land, including underground infrastructure and existing mature trees.
Community consultation related to the concept proposals for an upgrade to Gilgandra Reserve were undertaken in 2023. We're improving access in line with Council’s Community Strategic Plan and Inclusive Playspace Study, and bringing all play equipment up to date with the latest Australian Standards for safety. The play experience will be tailored to suit toddlers up to early school age, with an increase in the diversity of play opportunities.
Construction related issues, highlighted as key constraints during consultation, have resulted in necessary amendments from the initial concept plans. Council have worked alongside Sydney Water, as the site owner, to ensure the completed upgrade provides a safe, accessible and resilient playground for the community.
Changes include the use of rubber soft-fall to the playground area, and minor adjustments in the layout of play items and planting areas. The addition of rubber soft-fall was requested by Sydney Water in high-wear areas, to ensure the integrity of their remediation works, while accommodating excavation constraints around existing tree roots, ensuring the retention of mature trees, a current rendered plan is available here.
Gilgandra playspace forms part of a network of closely located playspaces including Barracluff Park (District level playspace) and Niblick St (Pocket level playspace) that provide a variety of experiences and cater for older children.
How to Have Your Say
Thank you to everyone who had a look at our proposed concept design for Gilgandra Reserve and shared their feedback by completing the survey. This survey has now closed and we are progressing towards construction.
